A proposal should demonstrate the investigator's knowledge of both the research area and the use of microarrays. The proposals should take the following form.
A Cover Sheet - This will state the PI's name, institution, address, phone number, fax number, email address, proposal title, and targeted organism. It can also contain similar information for a designated contact person.
A Standard PHS Biosketch - Use the PHS 398 grant application format. When listing your research support, include direct costs per project when reporting ongoing and completed research projects in the research support section. If the proposal is a collaborative effort, both PIs should submit their PHS Biosketches and include the Other Support Pages. This section should be limited to 4 pages per Biosketch.
A Research Plan - The Research Plan should clearly state the specific aims, the significance of the research question, the potential impact on the field, and the experimental design to be used. At a minimum, the applicant must state how many arrays are being requested. For microarrays, the Research Plan should be limited to five pages. For Gateway clones, the Research Plan should be limited to one page.
Resources and Environment - For microarrays, the applicant should document the resources and expertise available to design, perform, and interpret the experiments including data analysis. This should be limited to 1 page.
Data Agreement - For microarrays, the applicant should document their agreement to the NIAID's data release policy for PFGRC. NIAID's data release policy for the PFGRC is the timely dissemination of microarray data either in a publicly developed database supported by the PFGRC or other publicly available databases, as designated by NIAID. They should also document their agreement to adhere to standards for the recording and reporting of microarray-based gene expression data (MIAME), when adopted by research community and requested by NIAID. No agreement is needed for Gateway clones.
If applying online, the Cover Sheet and Data Agreement are created automatically. The submitted PDF file should provide the Biosketch(es), the Research Plan, and the Resources and Environment. If applying by fax or courier, please include all five items. You can print the emailed confirmation of your proposal to act as the Cover Letter and Data Agreement.
Applications should be submitted in English using a 12-point font.
